why “all natural” scented candles can be deceiving
When it comes to scented candles, "natural" doesn’t always mean better. While essential oils and botanical ingredients have their place, they’re not always the safest option to burn. On the other hand synthetic fragrances are carefully crafted in labs for safety, consistency, and performance. Making them a safer and more sustainable choice for both candle makers and buyers.
It’s easy to assume that essential oils are always a gentle, natural alternative—but many can become harmful when heated. Some essential oils, like eucalyptus, tea tree, and cinnamon, can cause respiratory irritation when burned. Others may trigger allergic reactions or be unsafe around pets and children. Unlike topical or diffused use, burning essential oils changes their chemical composition, sometimes creating harmful byproducts. So while that lavender oil may be relaxing in a diffuser, it might not be safe—or effective—when used in a candle.
One of the greatest strengths of synthetic fragrance oils is their consistency. Crafted under controlled conditions, synthetic scents are formulated with precise chemistry to ensure they’re stable and safe for burning. This means no unexpected chemical reactions. This controlled nature allows manufacturers to eliminate potentially harmful compounds and meet safety standards like IFRA (International Fragrance Association) guidelines. You know exactly what you’re getting, every time.
Taken even a step further, I only buy my scents from CandleScience CleanScents+® this means our candles contain no known or even suspected carcinogens, mutagens, reproductive toxins, organ toxins, or acute toxins. This includes phthalates or anything on the california prop 65 list. Honestly, I’m around these scents all the time while making candles—probably way more than anyone burning them—so keeping things safe and non-irritating is a top priority for me.
Surprisingly, synthetic fragrances can also be a more eco-conscious choice. Unlike essential oils, which sometimes require massive quantities of plant material to produce even a small amount of oil (think fields of lavender or citrus peels), synthetic scents can be created with far fewer natural resources. They also tend to have a longer shelf life and are more stable in formulations, reducing waste and improving efficiency in candle production. Fewer ingredients, less waste, and more precision—it’s a quiet win for sustainability.
The idea that “natural is always better” is a common myth, especially when it comes to fragrance. In reality, carefully crafted synthetic fragrances can be safer, more sustainable, and more consistent than their essential oil counterparts—especially when burned in candles.
So don’t feel guilty about loving that beautifully scented candle with a lab-made fragrance oil. When made right, it might just be the safest and smartest scent in the room.
